I have done Yoga a few times at the gym. I enjoyed it and would like to do more yoga but I find it challenging to be a the gym for certain times that the class are taking place. I recently tried the P90X yoga and quit after 30 minutes because I found it extremely boring and repetitive (same poses over and over again). Is this normal Yoga? Perhaps thats just the way Yoga is suppose to be? Are there different types of Yoga?
Does anyone have any suggestions of good DVD videos I can try?
Thanks in advance for any helpful info!
Getting to a class is best but I have liked Rodney Yee’s DVDs
The p90X yoga is not yoga, per say. It could be called power yoga, and is intended purely for the physical benefits. That is not Yoga. That is doing yoga poses, I wouldn’t even call it asana!
I agree with Yulaw, a class is best. Try a few different studios to see what you like.
I prefer, in the absence of a class, to use http://www.yogatoday.com because they offer a free 1hr class each week, they teach three different styles of yoga, and the classes are mostly outdoors and informal yet professional. no fancy hot bodies in spandex, sorry, but real people doing real yoga, with excellent instruction. Classes are only 4bucks apiece to download and put on your ipod or thumb drive too, to watch anywhere. They also offer podcasts for free.
I’m confident you will get many responses that will help clarify some things for you and will also give you more questions than you thought you’d need to ask.
Oh, yes, and we have a member of the forum who has a website with free yoga classes - I’ve not looked yet (I dont have room to do yoga where my computer is) but have seen many people say they appreciated his videos - His username is DoYogaWithMe I think, and that is his website as well. He can correct me if I’m wrong… I have to get to work so can’t look it up!
I tried p90x yoga also, bleh…not satisfying if your intention is real yoga, but a good workout really. I also concur that a class is best.
But before I found a class, I’ve been hooked with “Namaste Yoga” with Kate Potter. It’s the one they showed at 0430 on Fit TV or something like that.
DVD Review BOB HARPER YOGA FOR THE WARRIOR
Billed as an high intensity powerful yoga weight loss routine.
Intro is a bit over the top ego tirade about how this is THE system never seen before, colouring outside the lines yada yada yada. If you are reactive I recommend skipping through the beginning until they start working.
Adjustments: Haper’s adjustments are way sketchy and it is a good thing he is pretty because people seem to get less creeped out when not pretty basically fondles in adjustments. A butt grab on the nubile young woman allegedly to align hips, but a backhand shove of the male, 54:06, the caress of the woman’s abs at 48:10 as she rolls her eyes back…was a bit much; then another dismissive push to the male. The female pulled inward, supported, the male shoved, always away movements. The imagery is undeniable as he performs the closet alpha male role to a T.
Is it a workout? Sure it isn’t bad, but it isn’t all that new either, so I guess if you can get passed the expectations at the beginning, maybe just mute till they start working out you might get something out of it.
Is it fun? Actually it is. There are some timely smiles from one of the three models that encourage fun, she is working hard and loves it, we are working hard and are invited to love it. Maybe you’ll love it.
