Yoga for a broken foot

I received a call yesterday from my 73 year old father. It turns out he broke one of the bones in his feet below the ankle bone. His doctor said it wasn’t a bad break and should heal fine in 6-8 weeks and put him in a walking cast. My father also has a mild case of osteoporosis.

I’m not so concerned about the healing of the bone so much as:

  1. His being less mobile over those 6-8 weeks
  2. The asymmetry created by walking in a walking cast.
  3. Compensations he will create
  4. Reduced range of motion and strength from the cast.

I feel comfortable helping him with 3 and 4 once the cast comes off. However, does anyone here have any thoughts on what I can do for him while the cast is on that might help with 1 and 2 and any other potential issues I’m not thinking of? Thank you

When I was in a cast with a fractured ankle I continued to do two things, Pilates and Reiki, adjusting the Contrology exercises accordingly. I also practiced pranayama. When the cast came off, an acupuncturist was impressed by the chi flow to the recently healed ankle. To deal with the asymmetry, I went straight into an Iyengar Yoga course when the cast came off.
