Yoga for ankle sprain

hai, im having my left ankle pain for long time and due to constantly playing football it has caused my heel to start pain too. doctor confirmed yesterday that im having achilles tendonitis and need to rest for six week. but i’m doing yoga everyday and wish to continue it. could you please suggest some yoga pose that i can perform without putting much pressure at my ankle? my ankle got swollen from inside but not that obvious. i came to know this from website, “Treatment is possible with ice, cold compression therapy, wearing heel pads to reduce the strain on the tendon, and an exercise routine designed to strengthen the tendon. Some people have reported vast improvement after applying light to medium compression around ankles and lower calf by wearing elastic bandages throughout the day. Using these elastic bandages while sleeping can reduce morning stiffness but care must be taken to apply very light compression during sleep. Compression accelerates healing by improving circulation”. i want to know if there is any yoga pose that can do the same thing and help recover my ankle faster. i heard yoga chair can help. how to do that? what is your advice? thank u

Selvan, You mention excellent things in your post that speed up the healing but remember the body takes time to heal.

As far as learning yoga poses (such as chair pose, which is called utkatasana in Sanskrit) without an instructor, you can search online or get a book. Here’s a link to Yoga Journal’s instruction: http://www.yogajournal.com/basics/151

Inner Athlete (or another member here who is more qualified than I am) may be more willing to advise you on yoga therapies.

Good nutrition definitely is something else you can add. I think you need rest and hydration, extra vitamin C and perhaps increasing essential fats in your diet. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. You could do a comfrey poultice, too. (Just google comfrey poultice for instructions.)

And don’t overlook the power of the mind to heal our bodies! You can visualize the healing. See a healing white light enter your body and travel down to your ankle. See it working to restructure the tendon fibers and to clean out toxins that may have accumulated there.

I wish you the best in your healing! ::smiley:

thank u, i really appreciate that

Hello Selvan,

Bearing in mind that I am not a medical practitioner and do not give medical advice, here is what I would suggest if you were my student…

Start a regimen to reduce inflammation. This would include changes in lifestyle, nutrition and the addition of meditation.

Topically there are three things I would recommend; sunbreeze oil, maha vishgarbha, and Pan Away from young living. Also an oil that aligns with your dosha. When the pain is accute the application is frequent. As it exponentially diminishes so too does the application frequency.

Rest is critical and I am talking about the deep rest provided by 10 minutes (minimum) of Shavasana. Ice is okay to use but only for 2 minutes at a time.

If there is an “itis” as you say there is, the yoga response is rest rather than doing. Once the swelling goes down then the process I would use is one of freeing tension and adhesions in the calf muscles to relieve the Achilles.

So there is a way to use Yoga to support your healing. However to my mind it requires a well trained yoga teacher, what someone else on the board referred to as a professional. Go figure.

hai. thank you for the post, appreciate that
