Yoga for elderly cancer patient

Hi: this is my first post here. So glad I found this forum.

Can anyone recommend a yoga practice suitable for a 61 year old woman, recovering from ovarian cancer surgury? I’m retiring soon and moving to the Denver area.

On CityData someone recommended Namm yoga, but while I respect spiritual practices, for myself personally, I’m an atheist and not wanting to get into some practice which includes belief in the supernatural.

Your input appreciated.

Several points come up in your question TF.
Your current belief is that there are no deities, is that correct? And does that also mean (for you) that you do not believe there is something greater than the human being? I want to be very clear that I am not at all interested in arguing, persuading, or debating on this particular topic. I’m merely trying to ascertain a context.

When a student is confronted with a severe dis-ease or threat to their existence it should absolutely challenge some long-held beliefs. In other words the way or ways in which we conduct life business have to be altered. That may be a deeper conviction or a shallower one, or it may be completely pragmatic but operations must be changed for our well being to be championed. And you may already have done this but we have many readers here and this post will exist (in perpetuity) so bear with me.

Students who are recovering from dis-ease, major trauma, significant life challenges, they are often best served by a gentle, restorative practice (of asana or poses, if that is all you are seeking) so that the nervous system and immune system can exhale, relax, and be more efficient in their doing.

Practices I would recommend would be Purna Yoga (the lineage in which I am trained), Viniyoga (as conveyed by Gary Kraftsow and his teachers), and special classes (not general ones) in the Iyengar and Anusara systems. I would avoid any fiery, fast, heated practice as this is too much stoking for the context you’ve presented.

love and light,

gordon
