Yoga for Postural Correction and Illness!

Hi,

brief history about myself. I’m a 22 year old male. A few months ago something happened and my body crashed and went into shock (paranoia, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, uncontrollable and weird thoughts, unable to walk more than 5 feet without collapsing, etc.) and have been recovering eversince. It was triggered by an allergic reaction to an antibiotic but I believe my lifestyle and other factors played a huge role that allowed for the crash. I currently have Adrenal insufficiency issues but refuse to go on hydrocortisone, some thyroid issues, and am getting checked for other things. I am slowly recovering but currently as it stands, I still cannot drive (get really lightheaded, the stress is too much for my adrenals, heart palpitations etc,) Cant walk very far either and have a MYRIAD of symptoms.

I am lookin into learning yoga for 2 purposes. One, to regain my health and whichever method of yoga or how, I do not even know where to begin.

And two, postural correction. I cant help but think that without a straight posture, my energy flow and body’s functionality is hindered. Currently, ive been to 6 chiropractors (finally realizing they only give relief but never CORRECT the posture) and have been getting trigger point therapy (which does actually really help a lot with flexibility and flow of my energy and blood. When i am sitting, I cannot have a straight lower back with my legs extended. Just impossible. If i extend my legs, my lower back is completely curved out. And if i straighten it, my legs must bend at at least a 35 degree angle and i have to use my hands to hold myself up. This is not normal and i have come to realize this only recently! I wish i had known earlier because i have been doing a lot of heavy lifting, bodybuilding, martial arts and sports for the past 10 years and am worried I “solidified” my posture this way. My trigger point therapist found MULTIPLE knots “the size of large eggs” in my traps as well as my upper back near my scapula. I realized those come from lifting and heavy exercises using bad posture for the past 10 years.
So I am getting massage to release those up. But i need to retrain my body and start to do my own thing to strengthen and loosen the right muscles. Yoga seems like a good thing to help me with that.

Any suggestions are appreciated. I don’t have enough money to join the near dahnyoga facility and in my current state of health, i doubt i can even do an hour long session of yoga. I will have to work up to it though.

Hello Powertool4,

You have written about some concerning health issues and postural problems. You are also new to yoga.

My best recommendation for you is to have a few individual yoga sessions with a very experienced yoga teacher, preferably a yoga therapist. If there is no yoga therapist near you, look for restorative yoga or viniyoga. An experienced teacher or yoga therapist will discuss your questions with you and come up with an individual yoga program that fits your current condition. It is unlikely that a class setting is going to get you anywhere at the present moment.

Yoga is a very complete discipline - more than just the postures - and it can address the multidimensional issues (body, mind and spirit) that you are facing.

Best wishes for your health.

You need to chant a mantra to heal the body.
