Can anyone tell me how yoga can help someone who is suffering with prostate cancer? I’m a teacher in training
one of the things of yoga is purification of the body, by doing things like cleansing techniques and fasting you can rid the body of toxins, and that is what cancer is, a toxin.
do a search on it, "six purification techniques of yoga"
Hatha Yoga - Asana, Pranayama, Mudra, Bandha, Cleansing Process (Shatkarmas)
Thankyou, very informative site.
I have a student who claims that headstand is particularly beneficial for prostrate problems. Another claims shoulderstand works for him. The first person has cancer of the prostate, the other just general prostate problems.
I had prostate cancer removed by prostatectomy in 2002. I wish I’d known about bandha’s back then. Prostate cancer, very often, is caused by a built-up blockage of life force AKA testosterone, which we all have, though some have more and some have more blockage. In some traditional hindu definitions it is known as nagging wife’s disease. The AMA recognize’s that a lack of regular sex could help cause Prostate cancer. Bandha’s redirect the life force back up, instead of out through the penis- to make more life with the life force. Aswini Mudra, or the puckering of the anal canal is tangential to the prostate so it directly pulls back on the blockages. The entire canon of abdominal and pelvic lifting that permeates most asanas help this generally. Inversions recruits gravity for this redirection. For myself, I experienced relief from incontinence within days and I believe ,better sexual expression, in the long run ( that means erections are possible without and great with viagra ). Yoga should be done before prostate cancer so there won’t be any but after, it is a great help; as it is for everything , I’ve found. Namaste

If a yoga teacher is interacting with a student in such a way as to provide remedy or support for a therapeutic issue then that teacher must either have experience in working with that issue or the student must be directed to a senior teacher who does. Experience can mean hands-on work or training, or simply being advised by that teacher who trained you. The other option is to have the person come to class and make them comfortable without aggravating their condition.
So the answer to your question is “Two basic ways”. The first is giving them an awareness of their body through which they can examine their capital S self. This can be considered palliative - helping them to generally feel better, relax, be calm, use their breath. The second is specific protocols for supporting the issue they are experiencing.
As yoga teachers, having integrity means knowing when we do not know and operating in that way. There’s nothing wrong with being a teacher in training and hopefully we are all growing. There is also nothing wrong with saying “you really need to be working with a more experienced teacher so your needs are met”.
Then the student can chose to come to a class that is not modified for them or to go somewhere where they received a tailored practice. Both choices, when mindfully made, are fine.
I would like to point out that cancer cells are no more a toxin than fat cells. Both naturally occur in the body. However when the cells are uncontrolled in their growth…that is a problem.
Pragmatically speaking, poses that balance the endocrine and immune system would be lovely for such a student. Please no jumping. And ask your teacher trainer(s) about the appropriateness of poses that bring energy into the pelvis.
InnerAthlete, I like your replies on this forum.

Excellent advice.
Unfortunately, contradicting what some people have said here, Cancer is not a “toxin”. Cancer is a disease, well and clearly scientifically documented.
The treatment for Prostate Cancer depends on how much it has spread, but at the end surgery is the end treatment.
I agree your way of life can help to decrease certain diseases, but when one as serious as a Cancer is been diagnosed, the way to go is to consult your Doctor, Urologist in this case.
The best advice you can give your student is to go and see his doctor…
If people where to be treated for their diseases at the right time instead of waiting years before getting treatment, quality of life would remain much better and SO ANY lives could be saved…
I have heard so many weird things from women before consulting at the Clinic for Breast Cancer. If they would have just come before we would have been able to do something for them…
Take care…
I’m alive because of early detection. I have 2 brothers who got diagnosed with Prostate cancer the same year; each of us had the degree of cure correlational to how early we got to the cancer, so I’m here to reiterate what Xamilo just said.- early detection helps most. There can be 2 types of cancer cells in the prostate: agressive and passive, the agressive, like me and my brothers had, wants to spread out of the prostate, the passive stays inside and though causes some discomfort isn’t life-threatening. I think the agressive is at the front of the prostate and passive is at the back, though it could be the other way around- I forget. It’s been about 8 or 9 years. Namaste

It can go both ways, having benign tumors (benign prostate hyperplasia) in any part of the organ but it is most common on the back lobe of the prostate, you’re right. Same thing with malign tumors, mostly Adenocarcinomes.
Again, the earlier you get diagnoses/treated, the least amount of complications you’ll be having…
I am 46 years old and began a yoga practice in August of this year. One of the many benefits so far is that I am able to sleep through the night without having to get up to go to the bathroom. This had been an issue for the last 10-15 years and I had resigned myself to having to deal with this for the remainder of my life.
My instructor said that the cobbler’s pose (Baddha Konasana) and pigeon pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana) are especially beneficial for the prostate.
1 with a bullet -aswini mudra, then uddiyana bandha, general abdominal pelvic lifting and inversions. The idea is to bring the life-force ( testosterone, et al ) up the other way from which Gravity and sexual desire is always sending it. Namaste

I think that treatment for prostate cancer is best consulted with a urologist. What I have said above is for the prevention of prostate cancer-once you have it it’s very doubtful that breathing techniques will cure it. Some PC you can live with and some you can’t, it’s an individual thing that generally a urologist knows best. I’ve had it. One of the 2 kinds of PC is very dangerous and relatively quick-it passes to the lymph glands and from there spreads to everywhere and to the bones , which is the worst kind of cancer. I am very strong against hospitals when a home cure is available but not when it comes to something as strong as this. I believe you can prevent it with yoga as PC begins as a blockage in the prostate and that is from the downward flow of lifeforce-yoga has always had as a prime goal the upward flow of lifeforce. Cheers

Indeed. Just as we have all stated before. Some things are better to be treated by the person who knows about it
