Yoga for sinusitis

Hi.
I often have sinusitis. I use a neti pot with just a little salt and baking powder. It works well flushing out all the goo when I am sick. I’m thinking of using also when healthy as prevention. But I don’t think it’s clearing out those deep sinus cavities way up in your forehead. Any way of doing that with either different liquid or completely different system?

It’s OK to do Jala Neti when you have a cold but only when the mucus is clear or white, if it’s yellow or green it’s infected and you’ll just spread the infection around.

As for you frontal sinuses: have you tried inhaling steam from a bowl, maybe with some eucalyptus in it??? I find that very soothing.

Steam is a great suggestion. I used it years ago when I was having some sinus problems and found that it helped a lot. In any drugstore you can buy relatively inexpensive machines that are made for inhaling steam.

To reach deep into sinus cavities you will need to perfect a rapid sniffing technique or use a pulsating irrigator with an attachment made specifically for the sinuses, can?t squirt water up a hose but you can pulsate it up. Clean your sinuses daily (1,2or 3x?s/day) not only when you have an active infection. Consider dairy, wheat and sugar may be the biggest contributor to your problem. There are many things to try, the goal is no more than one infection per year and no antibiotics.

Thanks. I’ve seen those irrigators online. I already have an oral irrigator to clean gums and tonsils, don’t know if I can use it for sinuses too. Any idea? Cleaning 3 times a day. Wow. That’s a lot. But one infection a year and no antibiotics sounds good. Any idea how to clean though? I wonder if I should be upside down when I do it.

Also, I don’t add sugar to anything, don’t have a sweet tooth, don’t eat dairy products at all and no wheat either. I live in Indonesia, pretty much fruit, salad, soups.

You can use any Waterpik device or similar but you?ll need to buy an adaptor similar to the Grossan Sinus Irrigator Tip for WaterPiks, three times a day since desperate times called for desperate measures, try twice a day to start it may be enough and yes experiment upside down, side to side let it run way back than drain it out till clear. I’ve perfected the sniffing technique and no longer require anything but a sports bottle.

Okay, I’m sold. Please tell me about the rapid sniffing technique. What is it called. Maybe I can find it on youtube.

Hi Expateach,

You should consider oil pulling as well. Cheers!

Agree, as well as Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar.

It?s a matter of trial and error, head tilted to the side and upside down with continuous quick short bursting sniffs without inhaling to the lungs.

Does that bring the water into the sinuses higher up in your forehead. They seem so high up and inaccessible by any way such as this.

The idea is that as the inflammation improves over time you?ll be able to access the Maxillary (behind the cheeks), Ethmoid (behind the eyes) and Frontal (forehead) sinus cavities. The Frontal (forehead) sinus is what is being attempted with the upside down irrigation, these cavities have gravity helping to drain naturally, the others do not they rely on the cilia (hair-like structures).

Does the water for irrigation have to have a little salt or something or can it be just warm tap water?

You have to use a saline solution without preservatives preferable mixed by yourself, one must experiment for best results, transforming your sinuses is a lengthy complex process and you?ll need to do research on your own, two webs sites below to get you started, both these doctors have good books, also check out a Forum specific to sinuses:

What about swimming in the ocean or salt water lake (if nearby).

I suffer from sinus issues, but i surf everyday - if i dont hit the ocean my sinus’s play up. Total salt water therapy works for me:D

I’ll start swimming in the sea more. What about swimming pool, maybe the chlorine kills sinus bacteria too?

I dont know about chlorine. I worked as swim coach for ten yrs, chlorine is a most unpleasant substance, only used to to kill/wipeout bacteria. If you have an infection i would avoid chlorine.

Ocean does wonders

You should keep you warm in erratic weather because our disease always becomes serious. Yoga for sinusitis sounds good but I haven’t enough free time to practice ^^.Take care
