Yoga- Hinduism or Exercise

I have recently been reading posts, reading books and thinking about Yoga. I am amused to see the poster write such things as “I want to use yoga to get in shape/or my abs in shape/ or whatever to get in shape.” Then I read the direct opposite, “Yoga is not asana, Yoga is meditation, a spiritual realization.” Aka, Hinduism.

Neither is bad. They are just labels. But the purists would disagree.

What is Yoga?
I don’t know.
People will disagree.
Each might turn their noses up at the other.

For some it could be getting your abs in shape.
For others it could be a deep spiritual practice.

I don’t know.

Why practice Yoga? has always been a question of mine.

My answer?
It just makes me feel good when I practice yoga.
And that is enough for me.

Please get an idea of which yoga you are talking about,
There are different types of yoga those are bakthi yoga, karma yoga and jnana yoga , which are spiritual practices of hindu religion. These are part in raja yoga.
There are eight lambs in this raja yoga. Yoga asana is the thrid in raja yoga , this part teaches us asanas to strengthen the mind and the body. this yoga asanas, any one can practice for peaceful life.

It is not a problem at all that you do yoga, because it makes you feel good. If you want to do yoga to feel better, cure your back pain or heart dissease, that’s all fine. The teachings of yoga are open to everyone who is interested. When one wants to practice and understand yoga on a deeper level, one needs to understand that the practice and purpose of yoga are based on the metaphysics of ancient India and that it is not just a secular pursuit.

Please… not another thread on this subject! Post in the existing ones.

Meditation

FREEDOM
of mind

I want to point out that meditation and spiritual realization are not ‘AKA’ Hinduism. These are, and have been, practiced by unrelated cultures everywhere.

Given your 2 options - yoga for me is exercise.

these are, and have been, practiced by unrelated cultures everywhere.
Not really on the same level and with the same practices and purpose.
Not really on the same level and with the same practices and purpose.
“not really on the same level” - BS
"not the same practices" - this is true
"not the same purpose" - even larger pile of BS

These may be your truths, please do not impose them on others.

Ah, I see. You are in denial.

Yoga is a set of tools just as things for farming are a set of tools. They can be used in many ways. There is no one inherently “right” way for Yoga doesn’t allow space for the residency of dogma.

How human beings use the tools is another matter altogether.
Some want to grow a single plant of herb. Others want to grow genetically modified crops while still others hope to feed the world in a healthy way.
