I live in a little town and we don’t have anyone that teaches yoga. I’d like to become a instructor but I need 200 hours with a teacher in order to become one. Do anyone know how I get to be certified? Is there a way for me to get certified on my own?
I’ve been studying on my own for about 3 months now and I’m very good according to a yoga teacher I talked to in omaha. I showed her what I could do and she was impressed by the facted I’ve never had any instruction other than books and dvds.
You need to study with a good teacher. 3 months on your own is just not enough time. Teaching yoga is not just about doing yoga poses. I would do another posting and see if I could find a good yoga teacher within driving distance. Maybe you arrange to see them once a month or something.
Shadowsai,
I’ve seen some folks refer to the Yoga Alliance website for teacher training. As I recall Yoga Alliance doesn’t train teachers directly but approves of teacher training programs that meet their standards, and helps folks find programs and teachers near them.
I’m glad to see that you have some expectations of yourself before teaching others; I hope you’ll keep posting and reading here to refine what those expectations might include.
i read a quote from BKS Iyengar, " Be a good student, learn to know your self, before you become a good teacher ".
before being a good teacher, one have to become a good pupil, there is no rush on being a teacher, try to devote and learn and practice for several years, being a teacher holds a lot of responsibility, do not practice or experiment with other person body, practice on our self before we pass our knowledge, this is not me saying, it’s something i remembered when i read Tree of Yoga by BKS Iyengar.
I’m currently driving 2.5 hours one way for my teacher training. Do a lot of research when selecting a training. Find one that limits the number of students in the class so that you get more one on one attention.
