Yoga instructor certification

Very happy to join these forums.

I travel on an annual basis around North America, Europe and Asia.

I am interested in becoming a yoga instructor.

I have just come back to North America and a local school is marketing a 200 hour course that they say is “accredited” fro $4000.

Could someone provide facts of how to become an instructor? I have not even contemplated this before and only enjoy yoga.

Thank you…

Namaste Clark,

What you need, in my opinion, is the love, compassion and commitment to share with others what you have come to understand about yoga through growing your own awareness over the years. When you feel that your own awarenss allows you to share, then I believe that you are ready for sharing with others.

Contemplate this and meditate on it, it is also a huge responsibility you take on when you start to teach others in terms of their spiritual unfoldment. Are you ready for this?

There is more to sharing yoga than just teaching asanas, pranayama and a little philosophy.

I’ll take a slightly different approach then my dear friend Pandara.

To me it is premature to contemplate sharing anything at all. That is a decision to make after you’ve completed a training. Some complete them only to enhance or deepen their practice and never teacher one iota. Other leap into teaching or are already teaching.

Becoming an instructor is easy. Becoming a teacher is incredibly challenging. Which of those are you interested in pursuing?

What I would recommend to students of mine asking this question is this:
Spend some time connecting with your intention. Do that in the heart or at the level of your soul and thus the level of your life’s calling or svadharma.

From the clarity of that intention comes the decision.
If you are called to share yoga - realizing of course that that means getting out of the way and being merely a conduit - then find a teacher training with a group that lives what they teach AND teaches teachers rather than poses. The skill set of a teacher is NOT the skill set of a practitioner.

Clark,

There are a lot of options out there and a wide range of tuition costs. I offer a non-dogmatic approach. My philosophy is to lay a fertile ground for your experience as a yoga instructor to evolve into areas of interest as you grow, and change in your interest and practice of yoga.

A great way to do this is by finding a training that gives you the basis to create, rather than a container to move with in.

Learning the history, and traditions is so important–the intention behind the practice. That being said, the evolution of yoga in our modern culture is so important. I think it continues to play a vital role in our societal evolution.

A good teacher training will equip you to be a part of this.
