I know that because I used another name to subscribe to YJ. I have not used this name for anything else but for YJ. Now I receiving junk mail from other companies to that “other name”. Shame on YJ…
YJ has been on the edge of my ‘list’ lately…they have several business practices that I find questionable. It’s unfortunate as I do think their articles are good and I find much of the magazine beneficial.
I stopped buying it years ago , its not really very inclusive , or even encouraging of that.
it did have some good articles but have not read for a while , I bet the circulation has gone up though. Its changed hands a few times I think.
YJ is approx 85% marketing, ads, etc…
The remaining 15% yoga articles and recipes are good, but not worth the price of the mag or having your e-mail sold.
What other magazines do you read? You might want to check out Toronto Body Mind online for some great philosophy and meditation articles.

agree. … the articles full of wordy unnecessary filler
i think I give up on magazines … there are so many great online resources
Those yoga magazines strike me as little more than commodification of spirituality. I’m not surprised that they would sell addresses.
Aren’t there any scholarly yoga journals out there? Something that doesn’t attempt to convince people that they need a special shirt in order to practice asana?
@CM: I am sorry to hear about Yoga Journal selling your information, though unfortunately, I am not surprised. They have lost a lot of creditability for me as a Yogic business in recent years, as they have moved from the original intention of the founders of the magazine. But those who are running it now are certainly good business people. They have made it through some lean years for magazines–all the while printing in full color–while other magazines have folded or changed to digital offerings. Those that have folded, or had to change from print to some type of digital offerings, are duly missed by me.
Here is a thread where a few of us shared about our favorite Yoga-centered magazines. And I am glad to say that Namarupa is again printing their magazine biannually, and offer monthly digital subscriptions too. Still, I miss Ascent when it was still in print. it was such a wonderful source of inspiration and insight for householders and those looking to integrate their Yogasadhana into all aspects of life and relationships.
Namaste,
Nichole
Nicole thanks for the heads up on namarupa , I liked very much look forward to new copies .
This is the company that owns Yoga Journal. If you think they’re interested in anything but the bottom line, in my opinion, you would be quite incorrect.
For the record, yogaforums.com will NEVER sell or provide your information to 3rd party companies except under court order and we’d fight even that tooth and nail.
That’s super frustrating—I totally get why you’d feel disappointed. I had a similar experience with a wellness brand once, and I started getting all kinds of random mail I never signed up for. It really makes you second-guess who to trust. Sometimes I’ll check sites like yelp.pissedconsumer.com/customer-service just to get a heads-up on how companies handle stuff like this. It’s a bummer when a brand you connect with on something personal like yoga turns around and sells your info. We practice mindfulness for a reason, right? That should extend to how they treat our privacy too.
