Yoga outside

do you think it makes a difference if yoga is done outside in the open or inside the house

Do you think so?

I think if you feel better doing it outside, then its better for you! I love to practice outside on a warm, sunny day!

Yeah, I believe I know the answer to that question. Gets you closer with nature, sun, earth, air, etc… Just kind of looking for more informed opinions as I am still only beginning the journey, or maybe I have been on it for a long time, I dont know

Nice, quiet place in nature, early in the morning (I like the calmness of the mornings) is for me like a dessert. Mostely on vacations. In a city I prefer inside, parks are always crowded.

I was going to take the exact opposite view:-) Of course, right? We must always explore the dualities.

The underlying current is that which is mentioned above. If it serves you then you have the answer, for you! Not for all however. Just for you.
The second question might be "in what ways does my practice here (or there, or anywhere) move me closer to my yogic dharma (your reason for being here). If it does not move you toward your dharma then it may need to be re-evaluated.

I love being outside. I love the sun here in Seattle (mostly because it’s reluctant eight months a year). Love to walk, the trees, people…
However I do not mix my yoga practice and my joy of nature. I do them each but not together. My practice asks focus of me, it requires breath, prana, tapas, svadhyaya. Those things, to ME, come indoors with fewer distractions. Classically it is possible that yoga was taught and practiced outdoors (I shall ask my teacher about the early years this evening). For those practitioners who are so centered, so focused, so well mentored that they can cultivate a practice outside, more power to them. I simply am not one of them.

I can’t wait for the end of April, maybe early May. I have a nice secluded spot, surrounded by trees, very peaceful. I had heard about these Yoga classes where they heat the rooms to over 30’c, the sweat supposedly cleanse’s the body. I don’t know about that but boy is it hard, especially during the hot summer days, I have to start around 11am just so its bearable, great for the tan also.

i think you mean bikram yoga. yes the heat generated allows the body to sweat and therefore detoxifies the body.

i think outside is always more appealing to practice asanas, fortunately here in brisbane, australia we have beautiful weather most of the year. unfortunately, where i practice with my teacher it is in at a health club and the room is airconditioned. it means your body has to work harder in order to generate enough heat to detox the same as if you were outside in the sun.

some people prefer to be comfortable, i prefer to be natural…so practice outside whenever i can.

The thing i hate about winter months is practicing indoors with artificial heat. You get to that point where you’re on the verge of sweating but not quite, skin feels all dry and itchy. I’m always moisturizing before my practice at this time of year.
