Yoga pose to free tight hip

Hi,
could I have some help and advice on a problem I have with my left hip please. Some background - My left hip went into spasm some months ago, following a stretch. I now have difficulty crossing my left leg over my right, and also difficulty lifting my left leg into my right knee. There feels as if there is some form of restriction in the groin area? I have had all this checked out, X rays mri’s etc etc, there is nothing wrong with the hip joint. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oh dear I guess I,m not going to get any help with my problem? :frowning:

Perhaps a little Patience…
Gordon is good at these kinds of questions…I am sure he will pop up with some answers (and questions) for you soon.

This is a very difficult question to answer when I do not know exactly how you hurt your self/what your flexibility is/have you lost flexibility/in which way you can no loner cross the leg/what your practice is/if you go to class or not/your age/your general fitness/lifestyle…etc etc…

Yes, Gordon is good with these issues. More information is definitely needed as yogacambodia suggested. The only thing I can think of is a hip flexor strain or tear. (ileopsoas) And if that’s the case, until it begins to heal you can use arnica for inflammation. But I would suggest going back to your Doctor for further tests. Physical Therapy would also be beneficial.

Let’s see what Gordon has to say.

Hi, thank you both for the replies. Yes, I’ve been through all the tests and been down the physio road too. To no avail. :frowning: It’s got to be some form of hip flexor issue, but I can’t bottom it out?

Which stretch was responsible for the spasm?
Is the difficulty in crossing left leg over right (I’m assuming you mean crossing it at 90? to the opposite or right leg) present in both seated and supine efforts?
What is “lifting my left leg into my right knee”? Is this from standing or supine?
I wish I could be more helpful but without further clarification I’m simply handcuffed.

Hi Gordon,
thank you fro the reply, I will answer as best I can your queries:
The hip went into spasm following a stretch wherby I drew my left leg up, with the knee across towards the right shoulder. At that point there was a pull in the groin area, following this the hip went tight and movement was restricted. (Doctors, physio, mri x rays etc, The hip joint itself is sound) I have myself managed to improve the range of movement by approx 40%, but I can’t seem to go any further. So, again to answer the queries. To explain the restricted movement, yes, when the left leg, bent at 90 degrees, is difficult to cross over the right leg. Putting a sock on my left leg is difficult, but not impossible, as it previously was. Another difficult one is when laying semi suppine, knees bent, and twisting to the right. My left hip flexors also feel tight, and ache around my left hip/side. The restriction/pain is high inside the left groin area that seems to prevent the full movement. I hope that helps somewhat, and thank you for your help.

This is only an educated guess but consider that this might be a pull of the adductors or the Satorius (the former commonly referred to as a “groin pull” in the sports world). If this is the case they take a long time to heal, perhaps upwards of six weeks.

One of the things I’ve learned as a therapeutically trained yoga teacher is that most people don’t really want to do what is needed to mend. They’ll do some of it, pick and choose…so I’ve amended my teaching to conserve energy in those types of situations. Since I don’t know you and you’re not my student I’m going to leave it here.

There are several posts on the board where I outline remedies in all three realms for healing this sort of thing. If that interests you and the search engine is not helpful AND you are going to actually do what I suggest then feel free to PM me.

I have sent you a pm, thanks again
