Yoga Project

I’m a senior at Lake Washington High school and we have something that is called the senior project. This project, what ever you choose to do, has to do with your future interests/career path. I know that I want to something with yoga, but I don’t know how I can turn it into a project. Any ideas? :-?

Pretend like you want to be a yoga teacher and want to open a studio…

Well I actually do want to eventually teach Yoga and open my own studio sometime in the future

One of the immediate and perceivable effects of simple breathing exercises and Om chanting, is better concentration. Your project could be to measure the qualitative improvemment in ability to concentrate. You can have a control group of volunteers. Invite some Yoga teacher who would happily help you and design a simple 10-15 minutes daily routine. You can administer a questionnaire before and after the test period to ascertain and possibly measure a change.

Hello Candra,

If you are feeling called to do your Senior Project on yoga that is wonderful. Of course there is a difference between something we are called to do and something we do as an activity like the debate, environmental, or peace club.

However, if you are determined to shape the topic into your career and thus your project then there are several things that you and your teacher might find interesting.

You could look at any of the larger issues facing yoga today. For example the nature of teacher training and how it is possible for a person to earn the title “yoga teacher” after a 21-hour weekend course. Or perhaps you could arrange to take classes with many different instructors and do a project comparing and contrasting the required skills of a teacher and how radically different they are from the skills of a practitioner.

You could also look at the required small business skills needed to manage a yoga studio AND keep the business soluble or in “black ink”.

Or perhaps you’d enjoy a project exploring the many different sorts of physical practice (called “asana” in Sanskrit). You might even examine how misused the term Yoga is when often it refers ONLY to asana and not to the vastness of Yoga.

Any of these strike your fancy?
