Yoga Questionaire from Student

Hi, my name is Wilson, and I’m a student at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. I’m doing a project on designing a product that enables yoga practitioners to be able to do yoga outside in winter weather.

I am currently in the early research phase of my project and I’m hoping that these 5 questions could help drive my design.

Below are the questions:

  1. How does doing yoga make you feel (during and after)?

  2. What kinda of confinement (garments/space) would make the act of doing yoga uncomfortable?

  3. When doing yoga, how important is your working space? Why?

  4. Have you ever done Yoga Outside? How does it differ from doing it indoors?

  5. Have you ever done yoga in cold weather before? What was it like?

All help will be much appreciated. Thanks!

1. How does doing yoga make you feel (during and after)?

  • Calmer, more relaxed, less tense with better range of motion; increased clarity of mind, better breathing.

2. What kinda of confinement (garments/space) would make the act of doing yoga uncomfortable?

  • Garments: heavy/restrictive clothing, anything hard to sit down on the ground while wearing.
  • Space: Cold. Cold is uncomfortable. I can focus in most other environments.

3. When doing yoga, how important is your working space? Why?

  • It is helpful that my space be uncluttered, with little distractions, and that my environment be humid enough where I don’t have trouble breathing. I usually prefer to practice alone in a quiet room that is dimly lit so that I can relax my eyes and ears.

4. Have you ever done Yoga Outside? How does it differ from doing it indoors?

  • Yes - I’ve done some practice at the beach and in the woods while hiking, in which case it is a little unnerving that strangers can watch what you’re doing. I have trouble doing yoga outside when it is overly windy, dry, sunny, or cold. Doing yoga outside in the caribbean under a deserted cabana was none of those things, and I loved it.

5. Have you ever done yoga in cold weather before? What was it like?

  • Yes, I tried to yoga outside in Snowy wintery cold. I don’t like cold. It makes it harder to breath - stings the air passageways. It is also harder on the muscles and the joints. Even if I am indoors in a cold house, or somewhere with a lot of air conditioning, I have to warm up all my muscles and joints in the morning so that I don’t have aches/paints/tensed muscles. I live in cold environments half the year, so then I practice yoga in long warm pants and a sweater. I just imagined myself trying to do warrior three while standing on a big sled in my snowy front yard. It probably wouldn’t end well, but it would be entertaining to watch.

I just bought an electric blanket and have been doing my pre-bed yoga on top of it because it is too cold in the house I’m staying at. If you designed an electric heated yoga mat, I’d consider buying that too!

Hi,

  1. How does doing yoga make you feel (during and after)?

Unless your really excited and motivated, a Yoga class can be quite boring to begin with, but toward the end of the class you start to feel a little better. A bit more relaxed. If you have bad posture or really tight muscles, or if your really unfit, Yoga can make you feel pretty dam good. I found the fitter I am, the less I get out of a Yoga class. It’s perfect for anyone wanting to go from a sedentary lifestyle to an active one.
I use Yoga now to loosen up my body, and help relax before bed.

  1. What kinda of confinement (garments/space) would make the act of doing yoga uncomfortable?

Uncomfortable garments -Tight jeans, a leather jacket, and army boots.

Uncomfortable space -I’m not a fan of small spaces. Need enough room to move about.

  1. When doing yoga, how important is your working space? Why?

Important. I like to keep focused on the Yoga, and not have to worry about bumping into coffee tables or other people (unless their hot lol)

  1. Have you ever done Yoga Outside? How does it differ from doing it indoors?

I’m not a fan of doing Yoga outside, cause I’m a guy, and were I’m from, guys who do Yoga are gay.

  1. Have you ever done yoga in cold weather before? What was it like?

Yeah, you need to start out slower and get a good warm up happening. It’s pretty hard, cause sometimes when it’s really cold, I can even touch my toes.

  1. How does doing yoga make you feel (during and after)?
I feel best if I do yoga everyday cause then I am less stiff and the movements are easier making me focus more on breathing and relaxation.
If I have been practicing regularly, I feel much better after the practice, relaxed.

  2. What kinda of confinement (garments/space) would make the act of doing yoga uncomfortable?
    long sleeves

  3. When doing yoga, how important is your working space? Why?
It is important to have enough space for my movement without getting in touch with neighbor.

  4. Have you ever done Yoga Outside? How does it differ from doing it indoors?
Yes, it is nice if it is warm and not too sunny. I have done it close to the sea and mountains and it is enjoyable to feel the fresh air and natures sounds.

  5. Have you ever done yoga in cold weather before? What was it like?
If it gets too cold, it is uncomfortable.

Well met Wilson

I am currently in the early research phase of my project and I’m hoping that these 5 questions could help drive my design.

Below are the questions:

  1. How does doing yoga make you feel (during and after)?
Renewed, refreshed, empowered and wanting more.

  2. What kinda of confinement (garments/space) would make the act of doing yoga uncomfortable?
Crowded studios make me uncomfortable. I prefere space to move without luck touches. I prefer yoga in clothes, even when alone. I do not care whether others wear clothing or what they are wearing. To each their own.

  3. When doing yoga, how important is your working space? Why?
As above I do not like crowded studios. I’ll often leave if overcrowded. I do not want to inconvenience others by brushing up against them and find my alignment suffers if I have to be wary of being in others space.

  4. Have you ever done Yoga Outside? How does it differ from doing it indoors?
Yes! Outdoor yoga is amazing. The fresh air, the feeling of the sun and wind on your face and body is invigorating. The sound of wind, rain, water, the occasional grace of a small life form visiting the practice is such a gift.

  5. Have you ever done yoga in cold weather before? What was it like?
Sure. Yoga can be done anywhere without or within. When it comes to an asana practice warmth is preferred by many and me, cold muscles, drafts, restrictive clothing, overheating, the vibe that others might not be enjoying the effort, all interfere with both movement and the ability to gauge a student’s alignment. Winter meditation though in the cool, crisp air. IN!

1. How does doing yoga make you feel (during and after)?
It depends on the class and the teacher. Some classes can be painful, some are a bit boring and some are inspiring. When I practice on my own I feel relaxed and centered and no matter what you feel really good after. Relaxed, loose and happy.

2. What kinda of confinement (garments/space) would make the act of doing yoga uncomfortable?
Don’t do yoga in jeans, with slippery socks on or in a phonebooth

3. When doing yoga, how important is your working space? Why?
It depends on what you mean. I should feel comfortable in my working space. Like I don’t want to feel like I can bump into things easily or be embarrassed. I have worked on a patio, grass, carpet and a yoga mat and as long as I feel comfortable I’m good.

4. Have you ever done Yoga Outside? How does it differ from doing it indoors?
Yes I’ve done yoga outdoors. I do enjoy it better but I’m not sure why. I have always done yoga in beautiful settings outdoors though and I feel more at one with nature (sorry if that sounds to granola)

  1. Have you ever done yoga in cold weather before? What was it like?
Again it depends on what you mean by cold. Where I live it isn’t very cold at all. Yoga tends to warm your body up though so even though I wouldn’t enjoy it as much I think it’s do-able.
