Yoga rug vs. bath towel

hi,
Ive just begun Ashtanga and am wondering if I can prevent
slipping on my mat by using a regular bath towel or do i have
to shell out for a special yoga rug?

thanks!

Hi,
I had the same problem and I asked my teacher about it. She advised me to wash my mat. Also, she said that I could use the towel from the gym to put it on the mat when needed. The towel works for me. Usually I use it for my heads when needed. I tend to use it for a while and then remove it.

Just seems like one of the risks associated with sweaty practice like Power, Ashtanga, or BeekRum. So I guess the direct reply is use whatever allows you to do this practice of your choosing in a safe way.

Hi,

I have similar problems when doing Ashtanga. I have not tried a yoga rug but might if anyone has had a positive experience of using these.

However, I have been using now for sometime a chalk ball. This is a smallcloth covered ball which contains chalk. When your become slippery, simply just pat the ball, and a small amount of chalk covers your hands and absorbs the sweat.

You can by these from climbing stores and various yoga outlets.

I hope this helps

My favorite response to all of these questions comes from a yogi whom I met at Kripalu. He says they used to practice Warrior poses wearing roller skates! A lovely image when considering the qualities of control in a roller coaster world…

I started using yogitoes SKIDLESS yoga towel and it solves the slipping problem. What I like about it is that I can wash it after each use so it is always clean. They come in different colors and I have a few to alternate. Great if you sweat a lot because it is very absorbant. I see some guys dripping sweat like a waterfall and the towel completely soak it up. It doesn’t bunch up easily like a regular towel will. The only thing is when your hands and feet are dry, it is actually a little slippery. I usually roll it out after about 15 mins when I start to sweat. With moisture it gives good traction. My husband has the BIG which is longer and slightly wider. Just make sure you wash it twice as per instruction as it will bleed color at first.
