Hi I have started doing yoga about 6 months ago and previously have had a shoulder dislocation and a roter cuff problem (for about 2 years). I was wondering if there is any advice on poses that I should completely avoid or poses that may help my problem. Any advice would be really great.
Hello Iyengar Yoga,
Could you please tell us a little more about yourself? What style of yoga do you practice :D? How often? Can your teacher answer your questions?
What about your age and general health? How long ago were both injuries? Have you recovered completely or are you still experiencing discomfort or pain? When?
As you are experiencing shoulder problem, It would be better to consult with a Yoga teacher in presence.
what kind of poses are u tried before?..plz give some more information about you.
Generally speaking a student with those issues should be instructed how to stabilize the shoulder joint (keep the head of the humerus in the “right” place), use or activate the serratus anterior, and meditate using breath and color to facilitate healing in the joint - not to mention dietary changes. That is the complete yoga. Postures are an incomplete protocol but a good starting point.
But since that is what you asked, I would advise avoiding Chaturanga Dandasana and Vasisthasana, and extreme care with Phalakasana (adho mukha dandasana) Ashtanga Namaskar, Marjarasana, Gomukhasana, Adho Mukha Svanasana, Adho Mukha Vrksasana, Pincha Mayurasana, and Sirsasana until you’ve learned the Serratus and can use it to abduct the shoulder blades properly.

Hello Iyengar Yoga,
Take care that during this time you should physically consult any Yoga Consultant only , you only need pratical training
