Steps of Concentration:
Please note that concentration on a particular thing means that the thing you like to concentrate.( one particular thing). If you want success in concentration you may not be think about second thing when you are concentrating on a thing.
Step1:
Concentrate for 12 seconds is Dharana. ( 12 Sec. )
Step2:
12 times of Dharana is Dyana (12X12 sec.) = 144 sec
Step3:
12 times of Dyana is Samadhi (tumbisium) (12 X 12 X 12 sec.)=1728 sec.

12X12X12 seconds of concentration on a thing is called as complete concentration. At this stage you will observe only one thing that is your subject(any thing like).

Concentrating on one object always gives you rich knowledge (or feel) about that particular object. when you’re concentrating please imagine one object, like when I am concentrating on peace I suppose to imagine dove with new leaf or a green woods image.

Using this method people used to concentrate on god and blessed by him

Concentration is still ‘directing the flow of thoughts towards one object’ and it is not Dharana.

The effort required to Concentrate is different from effort to sustain it in Meditation. In Concentrating, one primarily uses will to herd wayward thoughts into an even flow; but it is still working on the thoughts, the effect. It takes much more Yoga practice, to know the causes responsible for pushing the thoughts in all directions. By working on the causes and by nipping them in the bud, one can hold concentration for it to become Meditation. Still, the awareness that you are eliminating the causes exists and you continue working on it to let only awareness prevail while the causes and their elimination will not be on yout radar. That is Contemplation. But, all this happens in the external, object-oriented world.

After pratyahara, the breakthrough, one earns ability to enter the subtle realms of our astral and causal selves. THEN, the skills of Concentration becomes Dharana and eventually, Meditation becomes Dhyana and Contemplation becomes Samadhi. In all the three subtle states, the object as a target is replaced by images of the objects, then just images, then impressions, then patterns, then codes behind the patterns, then Ishvara and finally nothingness. It happens over a long period of time, since each is a distinct progression requiring different skills and advanced practice.

While dharana, dhyana and samadhi are milestones many miles apart, once you reach each of them it is like ‘born again into unprecedented peace and happiness’ that makes all the hard work worth it.
