Yoga - university courses

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone knows of a reputable university course in yoga preferably located in India? I’m more interested in learning about yoga therapy and scientific approaches to yoga than studying yogic philosophy (which isn’t to diminish the latter).

Grateful for any suggestions.

I’ve already found SVYASA university: http://www.svyasa.org/course/bscyoga.asp

Has anyone heard about this and whether it’s a serious course?

Thanks

I attended SVYASA for their foundational yoga teacher’s program and know a few people who have pursued the university programs there, and none of them are dissatisfied with their education. However, I would recommend that you visit and experience the school for yourself for the foundational program at least before making any decisions. There are many people who did not enjoy the teaching style, (I LOVED it - but I love everything so I’m biased). They value philosophy, theory, psychology, and are a research institution.

There are many other good schools over there to pursue that sort of program in. If you go there with a plan to visit a few, you will be bombarded with the many options available to you. There is no shortage of knowledge.

You might also want to check out Kaivalyadhama institute, I know that they have higher education courses and have met some really fantastic teachers from there also.

Hi, thanks for responding.

Just wondering if you could tell me more about their style of teaching. What was it that you liked about it? What was it that others didn’t like about it?

Thanks again

Our foundational course, and I believe the other courses are heavily based on philosophy, as opposed to being focused on asana / pranayama practice as many people who were attending during my course expected. I went there because I am a huge fan of the teaching of Vivekananda, and they concentrate very much on his teachings and hold them in great esteem at that school. I got exactly the though-provoking overload of knowledge that I had dreamed of getting when I got there, but there were a few in my course who were dissatisfied that we did not focused on teaching the asana and the methodology of asana technique as much. They also did not teaching anatomy or physiology and that rubbed some people the wrong way. It is an immersion course and you are woken very early, stay up allll day and are very busy, and go to bed late. The course curriculum was very laid back and changed often, and that was also a point many people disliked. If you go there with a mind open to the knowledge they are teaching you, you will learn priceless knowledge. The people that I met there from all over the world and so many walks of life was worth the course feel alone! The course fee, by the way, was very low - and the accommodations are very traditional. One might end up in a dormitory and be washing with a bucket every morning,It is not so bad, but you’ll want to keep that in mind.

OK. Thanks for that Suryadaya. Much appreciated. Sounds like a wonderful experience!
