Yogic studies course at munger, bihar

hello,

i’m new here, just stumbled on while looking for information on the Bihar School. i’m looking for anyone who might have attended their 4 month yogic studies course, or any other course, at the Munger ashram (not Rikhia). is there anyone here?

i’m very drawn to this course [i cant post links yet, its at yogavision.net/byb/courses/ys_4mth] it looks like what i am seeking, and of course they are a traditional and highly respected school. i am indian myself although i’ve lived in UK for the last few years, and am very aware of steering clear of “tourist” yoga schools. i’ve been studying and practising myself for some time now, and feel ready to take it further.
anyway, the main problem i have is that bihar has a reputation for being extremely unsafe and a violent place to be. my family back home in india is throwing a total fit at the mention of me going alone to bihar for 4 months. of course i make my own decisions here but back home its a different story. i wish i could go visit for a few days before committing to the whole 4 months, just so i can show them it will be fine, but thats not going to be possible if i want to go this year.

so, i was wondering if anyone here has the experience of living/studying at the munger ashram and what you though of it?
i’d like very much to hear about your experiences of the teaching there, and if you felt safe?

thanks!

anyone here?

Hi Mayin,

Warmly welcome to the Yoga Forums!

Yes, you have posted the right link http://www.yogavision.net/byb/courses/ys_4mth.htm

A friend of mine from Vancouver, BC did attend this course and she praised a lot about this course. Be prepared to do lots of Karma Yoga \ Seva Yoga while in Ashram \ Gurukula.

Regarding safety concerns, my friend didn’t mention such concerns. I wish I could find 4 months and go there to enjoy the Satsang of true Yogis.

Namaste,

hello,

you can find lots of diashows / films about perfect yoga kids and ashram live in the yoga vedanta forest academy … sites are in german but I think you all will enjoy the pics …

yoga school of bihar has great books, also the ashram is very nice, just you dont do many asanas, instead you are doing the “real thing” …

some say its really hard as 4 months are quite long … I guess it depends … I really liked sivananda ashrams and bihar school as well …

Dear Friends!

I am asked by a friend of mine to clear some of your doubts regarding your concern for visiting Bihar in order to fulfil your yoga (spiritual) quest. He thought I may be able to help out.

First of all, probably you already know about Bihar School of Yoga though their yogavision dot net. But I would like to share information from my own experience as I attended a course there in mid 90s. It used to be eight and half month course a Ganga Darshan, Munger. I don’t know if they have that course any more. Now most common course are 4 months long - Usually two in Hindi and 1 or 2 in english every year. It is a great school no doubt. it is tough in the begining for everyone but once time progresses and rythm builds up, everyone does fine there. When i attended law and order was very bad in Bihar (that had virtually no effect on Ashram even then) because the government of Rabari Devi (then Premier of the state) and her husband and current Indian Railway minister Mr. Lalu Prasad yadav basically made all sorts of “Gunda Gardi” flourish in the state. Almost all honest police officers left the state and only corrupt officials were running the state administration. But three years ago, a new government came in power under the chief ministership of Mr. Nitish Kumar. He is able to restore the law and order. All the top Police officers who were known for their integrity and simply could not work with Lalu/Rabri like D. N Gautham, Nilmani etc. they are back in the state with top positions. And at this moment, Bihar , is probably one of the top 5 states in terms of law and order among all Indian states. Some people say that Bihar Administration is best run in last 50 years. It used to be kidnapping for ransom a daily thing one part of the state or the other. That has completely disappeared. Most of the criminals are either in Jail or left the province. I was talking to some of my relatives just couple of days ago and they mentioned that this new chief minister has not done much for the development yet people are happy for single reason - That is they are not living their lives under fear anymore. So I don’t think you should worry too much about your safety in Bihar. It is a different Bihar today than it was 5 years ago.

I was born and raised in Vaishali (about 100 Kilometer from Munger). Same Vaishali where Budhdha spent 10+ years out of his entire 80 years life span.

Bihar School of Yoga have some kind of affiliation with local university - Tilka Manjhi University, Bhagalpur. When i attended a large number of students came from Australia and Eastern Europe. I don’t know if that has changed.

All I can say, if you can make good effort, then you will get quite a lot out of attending BSY. Teachers are excellent. Swami Niranjana Nand Saraswati seem to help this Ashram in great deal and that why it attracts large number of seekers from abroad. I guess rest everything you can find on their website.

Once again on your safety concern in Bihar, no matter where you go in India, there will be a concern if you are not little careful. Bihar is no different. But I think this is one of the very best place to experience Yoga in its highest form - all practical stuff.

Let me know if you have any other concern. Hope this posting helps.

thx for the detailled Info, I would have one questions: do you have experience with kundalini kriyas, does Bihar school teach these kriyas in the courses?

thx

For this information, regarding whether they currently teach Kundalini Kriya - I think you have to speak with School itself. It has been 10+ years and since I am not that well connected with the school. However, I would guess they must do something for Kundalini as we all know one of the best books on that subject was written by Swami Satyananda Saraswati of BSY “Kundalini Tantra”. As I said teachers at the school are very capable and they can teach all aspects of Yoga. But best to check this type of information with School itself. My information may not be that authentic since it has been 10 years, and in that many years so many changes has occured in the school I was told.

you can write to/ call to www satyananda-yoga de and they might be able to give you more relevant information

Hello,

thx for your Info, I am thinking of going to ashram for 4 months,

serapis

thanks very much everybody. i also got similar encouraging posts on another forum i asked this question. even though the school is so famous, still i get a better picture from people’s personal experiences. its very reassuring as i am generally cynical about most ashrams and yoga ‘teachers’. since i feel strongly about this one i’m glad other’s people’s experiences were rewarding.
also very relieved that safety is not an issue, thanks jeetendra ji. i can now ask my parents to stop worrying about this!
i will certainly apply for the course this year. cheers all!

Good Luck Mayin!

Please share your personal experience once you have gone through the course.

Namaste,

Other than their four months course, you may want to check their shorter yoga teacher training course too.
