just curious…lol
Yes. Just answering.
I used to have a rather tasteful round beer belly, before I started yoga. My weight hasn’t changed much as other parts of my body have developed, but the beer belly is definitely gone.
I’ve dropped a dress size in just a few weeks. My weight has gone down a little but I think I’m toning up a bit.
Interesting, I’m gonna post about weight and yoga classes!
power yoga will definitely help you lose weight. those classes can be tough!
just getting your heart rate up for an hour a day will help you lose weight…which yoga will do.
Actually this depends on the sort of yoga one is practicing and the way in which they are practicing.
What is more accurate to state is:
"…power yoga, it burns about 237 calories in 50 minutes and boosts heart rates to 62 percent of heartrate max, providing just a mild aerobic workout"
compared to Hatha yoga of the same duration which burns approximately 144 calories which is scientifically considered “no aerobic benefit”.
Yoga can really be used to control the waistline of most adults. It not only helps to keep the weight off but it helps to reduce thw weight in those already over weight. I think alot of people get the wrong idea about Yoga. Its not just benifcial for the body, but for the mind. When you learn to breathe right, and clear your mind, and just focus on the body, amazing and wonderful things can happen. I used to suffer from anxiety attacks, now its been over 2 years since I have had one. Just taking some time out in your day, weather it be morning, afternoon or evening. I put on a CD with a waterfall sound, close my eyes. I have an article on my site…check it out if you would like.
I’ve been doing Yoga for about two months and I notice that I am more flexible and stronger. I have been experiencing a lot of stress lately so the pounds keep packing on and I was hoping Yoga would help me focus and feel better about myself so I feel like doing more activities, thus loosing more pounds. I am happy to hear that Yoga has helped hippipower with anxiety. That must be a big relief.
lbarden, I hear ya! It sure does help with the flexability, I have noticed that also. Stress is nasty, and finding Yoga sure is a help isin’t it! I am happy to hear it has been working so well for you. I have been finding that getting up a little earlier and doing some yoga for 20 min, and 20 min before bed, really helps.
Not sure what I would do without it now. I take a break on the weekends, and find I really miss it by Sunday night. I have been doing it on my own, learning from DVD’s, but I attend a yoga class on Wed mornings now, and it has really opened my eyes to lots of postures and possitions that I would of never done on my own. Yoga rocks baby!!!
I started recording Namaste on Tivo. I am not sure if you have heard of that yoga program but it is on the fitness channel. I followed it for a few days but this week I haven’t put it on and used only my intiution (I don’t see spell check so I hope it is spelled correctly). So I have progressed to doing yoga on my own but only in the mornings. It puts a big smile on my face as I commute to work.
That is so great to hear. I might get that channel, I will have to check it out and see. It is a lot easier going at my own pace I find in the mornings. Helps me wake up slowly, and get the blood moving as well. This yoga class I attend has this deep relaxation at the end, as I guess most yoga classes do. Most of the ladies in the room fall asleep…LOL.
Guess it works eh! If I learn any new possitions, I will make sure to post them.
My class also has the deep relaxtion but I have not fallen asleep. My son joined me in one class (it was a 6:30 am class) and he said he almost fell asleep. I hope the ladies in your class don’t snore. Laura
That’s groovy! Taken your son. I know my daughter would love to go, maybe one day. I have not fallen asleep myself, but am pretty relaxed. It’s good to have a blanket with you for the relaxation part of it.
Today, in class, we worked on our hands. I mean moving the fingers…etc. Feels great when your done.
Knowone fell asleep this morning, but I bet they would have if it was 6am. Did the tree pose today…she made us hold it for a while to. Gotta work on the balance there myself. Getting the breathing down really helps I find.
I will stand on my head one day…who knows when that will be LOL
Stay groovy Laura.
My son is 19 and I find it a little ironic that he calls me a hippie and your sign on is Hippiepower. His work schedule doesn’t always allow him to come to yoga. He is going for his third degree in Karate next weekend. He is really awesome!
Very Ironic! Us Hippies gotta stick together. I think the more hippies, the better. We stay close to the earth!
Your son sounds like a really great guy. They grow up so fast don’t they? My daughter is turning 12, my son 8 and my youngest son 5. Yoga gets me through those stressed out days…LOL Such wonderful kids though, and wish I could slow down time a bit so I could enjoy them more.
All the best to your son with his Karate! Good for him. He sounds well balanced. The fact that he wants to do yoga with his groovy hippie MOM! 8)
It doesn’t appear however that the study indicates significant weight loss FROM physical activity of yoga. And the weight loss they seem to be citing is 3 pounds over ten years. Usually people asking about yoga and weight loss are not looking for those kinds of results.
But I’ll order the research paper and read through it to see if I’ve missed the boat on the results of the study.
More to the point, yoga in the context of the study points toward a higher self awreness which in turn might keep one from needly chewing/eating/grazing.
InnerAthlete, I hear what you are saying. From personal experience, I have lost weight while doing yoga, but I do it twice a day, and I am very careful what I eat. Plus I am still active outside of yoga.
I do think Yoga does help keep you focused on your health, and your body, and in return, helps you eat better, and be an overall happier well balanced person. I guess it depends on how serious someone is when they are doing Yoga. But either way, Yoga does not have to be serious, or have anything to do with weight loss. If you are doing Yoga, you should notice a difference in mental, and physical body.
Thanks for your point of view!
