Do you have a mantra?

That you repeat to yourself, either in meditation, or shavasana, or whenever else?

What is it (if you don’t mind sharing, of course!)? Do you have a few? Do you find it helps you?

I’ve been cultivating some personal mantras. Yesterday, during shavasana, I found myself saying:
(Breathe in) Joy, peace, love, harmony, acceptance
(breathe out) negativity, discontent, jealousy (or whatever I struggle with)

It came naturally, and I found it made me full of joy by the end. It was beautiful!

I also often just say the words “here” or “be here now” to myself to remind myself to keep my head in the moment and not worlds away.

How about you? Thanks!

It is better to use the most powerful, yet language-independent and religion-free mantra - “OM” (actually, pronounced as AUM)

I am familiar with Om, and very fond of it. I still find it helpful to create my own mantras, however. :J

Avacado,

Mantra is sound-based rather than idea-based. It’s about vibration, both mental and physical and not about thinking or meaning, which may actually counter a mantra.

I think “avacado” is a great mantra: you have “ah” and “oh,” which is 2/3 of aum, with use of the lips “va,” and pallete, “ca.” You see? It makes no difference what the word means as much as how it resonates in the mind and body. How about “avacad-OM.” Nice!

Om Namah Sivaya,
siva

Try experimenting with sounds. I know you can have a guru assign one to you, but I don’t know any. (Do gurus advertise in the yellow pages?)

I use the chakra mantras - lam, vam, ram, yam, ham, om. (yam and ham gets me a little hungry).

Sometimes I say, I am one with the Universe, sometimes I say, I am one with God, I also say, I send my love to all Souls living or passed on, or I might say, I AM…and, many time when starting the meditation, I will recite the Lord’s Prayer and then move on to something else.

This is fantastic. I’m already chanting it.

If you would like to investigate deeper into the sadhana, you should perhaps try using some mantras which are more scientific. There are various types of mantras, some of which are symbolic, and others which contain particular frequencies of vibration. Om happens to be one of them. Most of those mantras were in fact never spoken, they were heard. The senses which you ordinarily use to explore the outer, the same senses can be used to explore the inner dimension. And coming to certain depths of meditation, it is possible to hear certain vibrations. As an attempt to imitate those vibrations and contain them in a gross form, all of those single syllabled mantras have come into being. That is why there are particular mantras which are corresponding to the chakras, they are simply the rates of vibration of each energy center. They are like keys to open subtler levels of energy in one’s perception.

AUM is hardly religion free. It is the sacred sound of creation and the sound representation of god(Shabd Brahman) in Hinduism. Perhaps what you really meant to say that AUM is a natural sound that we make when we use the open and close the mouth while making a sound.

My mantra is ‘Pain is weakness leaving the body’. I heard it on a Documentary about the French Foreign Legion. They train brutally hard!

umm

I reckon it should be ehhhh… that’s far more natural to me than manipulating your vocals chords and going aauummm… it’s very awkward to me. Fortunately in my Iyengar class we don’t make strange noises, we bend our bodies and go home lol

Yogi Adam,

In a phenomenon like yoga, if one is to penetrate deeper into the sadhana, one will have to see beyond one’s likes and dislikes.

One of my all time favorites is…

“Bullllllshit. Bulllllllshit. Bulllllllshit.”

It has helped me realize more than any other.

I would apply David’s quote above in describing what I think about this post

Sounds to me the concept you have for Yoga is pretty particular, if not puny and insignificant.

You’re not obligated to participate in this forum (Spirit’s path) if you don’t like it.

At least you could pay some respect and tolerance, don’t you think?

I’m sorry you don’t have tolerance and respect for my views. I guess it’s your way or the highway.

I’d have it if you were a gentleman and not an intolerant troublemaker.

Once again, if you don’t share our views, just don’t join us.

I’m adding you to my ignore list right now, “Yogi” Adam.

I wish you an amazing and joyous adventure of spiritual discoveries for your incoming years.

Goodbye!

Now who’s puny and insignificant lol
