Living masters and authentc traditions

Namaste,

I would really appreciate any help or pointers from members here on whether you know any living masters or authentic spiritual traditions that I can join.
I am looking to spend up to 2 years or more practicing in the tradition under a master, during which I do not want any involvement in the world, I just want to dedicte myself to my spiritual practice.

Do you know of any such tradition and masters where I can do this?

Surya Deva,

Here’s someone very brilliant I would like to introduce you to. Swami Atma was a student of Vishnu Devananda and is still teaching with devotion to Swami Sivananda and an unbroken, sutra-based lineage from Rishikesh that is centuries old. There is a quality in him that is very inspiring, yet he’s a the most down to earth person you’ll ever want to meet, funny as hell, not to mention, he is also a supreme raja/hatha master and vedantin. Truly amazing person.

Here are a couple of typical discussions you might have with him. He teaches a program in Texas as well as elsewhere in the world.

Here’s also his main page.

Good luck

Hi, I’ve read some of your other posts now but frankly your arrogant know-it-all attitude really gets on my nerves. Do you really think you have what it takes to practise 2 years under a master? I think you are much too arrogant to last the distance.

It’ll be nice if you could prove me wrong. Find a real master, serve him, and report back in a few years, hopefully with less of an ego.

Frankly, I don’t care what you think

First of all here’s my opinion.

I just read on here that Sivananda refused to eat somewhere because he couldn’t find the right person (caste) to prepare his food!

This attitude tells me he’s kinda like “not what you should be looking for.”

I’ve read the Bihar yoga books Asana, Pranayama, Mudra, and Bandha and Kundalini Yoga and both are full of bits of bologne. Sure there’s some fairly true stuff in those books but honestly I feel there’s a lot of stuff in there that is FALSE.

I’m not going to spend a second to back up my statement with quotes and the like.

Merely my opinion.

If you want to go find a ‘master’ then go by all means do what you like.

@Scales

The Asana, Pranayama, Mudra and Bandha book is one of my favorites and what was used during my teacher training. I understand it’s you opinion, but would you share some reasons why you feel it’s bologna?

Just curious, that’s all.

Scales Sivananda did revise his opinion on the food thing , I think he became more liberal around it , but im no expert on Sivananda .

Scales,

I practice the Kundalini Tantra of the Bihar School of Yoga, and i can assure it isn’t bologne at all.

It’s pure tantric yoga. It WORKS.

The serpent looked at me two days ago, she had glowing white eyes…

Shakti Chalini Kriya…

Surya Deva,

Gather up provisions and move to a cave close to a fresh water spring.

Perhaps I’ll join you in the future…

Stuff in the Introduction. Reasons and theory given. Some of it doens’t sit right. Some of its good but there are a few things I didn’t like.

The rest of the book is tops.

I don’t know the ins and outs, maybe he was adhering to a cultural form for the sake of someone else…Who knows? But if he truly believed that then thats stupid.

Most of the Techniques are tried and true its some of their views that I find fault with.

maybe they wrote what they did for a general audience…? Still I dunno. Some of its false so why even put it in the book? Maybe a lack of understanding is the cause.

Any Yahoo can come across a tantric or yogic scripture and translate it - poorly.

Any Yahoo can Parrot yogic scripture and kinda sound like they know what they are talking about.

I would gather that most of their ‘stuff’ is splashed with tidbits of wrong ideas.

I ain’t saying I know it all but I got a good nose for bologne.

I want the techniques.

Not your commentary that vacillitates between nuggets of truth, insight and down right wrong ideas.

Scales:

Tantra has always been of oral transmission. Imagine how transmitted information can “mutate” throughout time.

Apart from this, each spiritual lineage follows its path and manner of transmitting knowledge and techniques, in other words, each one has its system. There might be superficial contradictions that can be reconciled if studied thoroughly and from the proper context.

I’m afraid your quest will end up in diaspora.
You won’t find the holy grail.

Dude.

First off. I already “have the holy grail.”

Second.
I have no problems with whatever techniques. My problem lies with what they say - their opinions and commentary in the books I’ve read. Not all of it. Just some things.

I HATE THE WINKY SMILEY FACE!@!

I HATE IT!!!

Same thing with Iyengar.

There are some people who bow down and call him a “master”.

He can teach asana good. He is no ‘master’

HYPE

I’m sorry!!!

What other smileys do you hate?

I’d give him 15min before he’s back on the Internet:“Anyone know how I can get the hell out of here!?!”

Did you mean vacillate? If so, I agree with you! Can I get a Wut Wut!

Yes I did. But then I looked up the word. maybe I meant waver

and

YES.

Wut Wut!

There are plenty of ashrams here in the US. My former teacher actually assists holistically in the masters health. This is in Florida and a wealthy man passed on and left his house and property for this ashram. I hear there is one in arizona too. Good luck on your journey.
