What drives your yoga practice?

Just a general question. I was wondering, what motivates you to do your yoga practice either at home, in studio or both? What motivates you to make yoga a part of your life? I had a steady yoga practice and because of illness fell out of it and am trying to get back into a good practice and I guess am looking for some motivation or inspiration. Thanks!!

Everything gets something different out of yoga, but I love how asana practice makes me feel mentally and physically.

I see what you mean. Tonight I went to my mat and did my asanas and I immediatly felt a lift in my mood so I think that was part of the motivation I needed. Just getting up and getting back to what has made me happy for so long. Thanks for your reply too!

What a great question.
Yoga reminds me to observe what’s going on in my body (bodies), even while this is not the summation of who I am. Its important re-centering for me, when many of my other hours in the day bring me away from proper alignment in so many ways.

to explore myself

I had to think hard about this one as yoga is such an integral part of my life that I cannot imagine my life without it, but also I had to dig deep to find out what was/is it that inspires me to do it. Eventually I came to these words of my teacher who always told me: “don’t think about it, just do it!” Bless her soul for hammering it into me on a daily basis.

Yoga had save my life, with out it, i wouldn’t be me now.

The people I get to know through it. Myself I get to know through people. And the simple pleasures, relief, and balance it provides.

For me the answer is simple - I feel great after practice. It’s like a good drug.

I enjoy the camraderie of the studio, and I love my teachers!

Radiance, Do you practice at radiant well-being in North Augusta?

I was fortunate enough to have a great instructor first time around. Never pushed - had us focus on our breath after we got that then we moved on to the poses. I practice at home every day and a one hour class once a week. It centers me, gets me out of my head for the 20 minutes to an hour a day that I do. It’s meditative for me. I now know how to breath and can think before I speak, react. Yoga is such an everyday part that now I can’t imagine life without it.

What drives me most to do yoga is how I become so much more present! You know how we often feel like we always want more, better, something new, or anxious for the next activity we are going to do, well when I am doing Yoga I am just satisfied with what I am doing right then! My practice makes me appreciate what I have. I also love how the body looks in each pose, I think it’s just beautiful!

its a great practice!!!and well to when we know something which is beneficial for our body what motivation is required after that?

Don’t use motivation, use discipline. For me it works better.

a car drives me to yoga practice
brother Neil

Brother Neil, Ijust had a good laugh and I needed it. Thanks for sharing your wisdom, brother.

Few things for me:

It shifts my pivot, from the mind mainly - more to the body awarness. After one session, I realized most of the problems I was intensly thinking about 2 hours earlier, are mainly products of my imagination. And are about the future, that didn`t yet come and might even not arrive at all.

Another thing - for most of my life, I really didnt like my body. For me, it was unatractive, weak and clumsy. Now, after just one month with yoga, Im realising my body is a tiny bit stronger, AND IS CAPABLE OF much more, its real and possible if Ill just stick to practice. It feels more balanced, and also Im realizing my body is not just the outer layer (hated by me in the past) but much more, and it can do beautifull things. Also, yoga is a way of being good for my body, and that is going from hating it to loving it.

And third, I just feel its good for me, on many levels :).

Thats nice, recently I`v read about (and experienced too) that our needs and desires (and waiting for them to happen, being fuifilled) deprive us from what is NOW. And now is everything, but to gain it I need to take away my eyes from the desires of future. And yoga can help much :).

Through yoga I have realized how far I can go when it comes to pushing myself (and my body) to achieve a good asana… this works for everything in your life.

my motivation is reserching… I just finishe reading the wonderful book about the Vayus - Vayu’s Gate - Yoga and the ten vital winds. and it gave me motivation to reserch the breath again in the Asanas.
