Why isn't more Yoga like this!?

I found this video of a guy doing yoga in a way I only wish more yoga classes would perform yoga. I personally love including Dands (hindu push ups) and Bethaks (hindu squats/not seen in the video) into my routine. I kind of think it’s a missing link. For anyone wanting to get in shape, your prayers are answered when you include Dands and Bethaks into your routine. I like to do them in sets of 25s, 50s, 75s, or 100s. Also if you ever experience depression or anxiety, performing dands and bethaks can completely transform your emotions… do 300 dands and 300 Bethaks and see how good you feel!!

Anyway just thought I’d share this with you, cause I feel I have benefited so much from these two exercises, and I’m certain anyone else who incorporates them will quickly see the benefits too. For me it’s gives my yoga routine the kick in the pants that it needs.

A break dancin’ yogi! Wow…

There is a woman in Greece that has designed a program like this. She hosts retreats there and has a DVD out. I will get her info and post for you.

That is Baba Ramdev- he teaches yoga and has an ashram near Haridwar. He specialises in healing of diseases through Yoga. The link to his ashram.

I believe the basic structure of what he is demonstrating in the video is the Surya Namaskar- though he has livened it up with various poses-perhaps to demonstrate flexibility.

@Reaswaran,

This is the same yogi as in the video Sd posted, correct? He is quite flexible I will say!
His moves are so quick it does look like he’s break dancing though! I loved how he smiled through the whole series!

Ever heard of Kalaripayattu (Indian Martial arts native to Kerala), I think you will love it! Not many people teaching it though.

It's GURU PITKA!

OMG WHEN DID HE GET 30 Million Disciples? Thats like a whole bunch.

Thats better than Depak Chopra and Dr. Phil combined.

lol… I love that movie. I hate Deepak Chopra… he’s full of crap!! He just takes advantage of weak willed individuals.

Yes, LG, he is the same Yogi. His flexibility is amazing. The chap is fairly rustic and has a large following in India. He holds Yoga camps where literally thousands of people participate. Dont know how effective that is as a teaching method. Has become extremely commercialised now. :frowning:

He is now trying to get into politics !

Kalaripayattu is based on the power of wild animals like the elephant , tiger, etc. It was always taught in secret -popular during the Chola empire, I think-not sure though.

Unfortunately, it never did make the final transition from war skills to a spiritual technique -like the Japanese martial arts. I would say this is the reason that there are hardly any teachers now. Sad.

Hey – thanks for posting that! On the last day of my teacher training in India, our instructor showed us some of these movements, like that gliding from downdog to updog and the one that looks like breakdancing into plank. Do you happen to know of there are any names applied to this kind of “flow” or whatever you want to call the style?

Edit: I guess I didn’t read well. So a Dand is the gliding movement? Any idea what the breakdance is called?

Dude.

Me too. Hilarious Movie.

Critics tore it up. Got bad reviews on Netflix. So for those reasons - I never watched it - until a poster on here turned me onto it.

It might be a little vulgar for some peoples ‘sensibilites’ but it made me laugh - a lot.

I love him jamming on the sitar in the begging.

and doing the cleansings with the strings and all the other skits in the morning routine…
:stuck_out_tongue:

Teaching time!
Lighten up just a tad on the weak willed individuals - and deepak.
Were you ever weak willed before you became this stronger guy you are now?

Because that’s asana?
Because that’s asana?
Is asana not Yoga?

I guess you are referring to the Surya Namaskar. The breakdance is not part of the Surya Namaskar. Guess Baba Ramdev was feeling a bit frisky
Is asana not Yoga?
It is 1/8 part of it.

I’m not refering to Surya Namaskar. I’m refering specifically to movement he does that looks like a breakdance into plank. I have seen that before and wonder if it has any name.

No idea. Looks like calisthenics to me.
It is 1/8 part of it.
Oh ok… well that’s the bit of yoga I like… so basically I’m interested in 1/8 of yoga. Also in my country when anyone ever says they are doing yoga, it pretty much means asana and possibly meditation.

Sure, pal. To every man his own poison. (I’ve been reading too many westerns. )
